Keeping Your Left Hand in the Dark

in Generosity

I’m often challenged by Jesus’ command to do my giving in secret.  I love the promise for a better reward when we quietly go about doing good for others.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Matthew 6:2-4

I’ve recently come across a service called, ‘Giving Anonymously‘ that allows you to follow Jesus’ command in a new way.  (Disclaimer: I’m not receiving any compensation or any anything for talking about this organization.  I don’t even know the couple that has created it).

The site allows you to send a monetary gift to someone in need, to know that 100% of the amount you donate goes to this person (no one receives a salary from this site), and then to receive a confirmation that the person did indeed receive the gift you sent.

In our lives, there have been several times where we wanted to give to friends in need or they wanted to give to us.  The offering of checks or money to one another was sometimes difficult and often not accepted by the recipient.  This form of giving enable those gifts to be made in a new way that seems to hold lots of great possibilities.

You can read more about Giving Anonymously at their site: www.givinganon.org.  If you’re anything like me, you can use every encouragement possible to move you away from greed and toward generosity.  Giving Anonymously is one service that does such a thing, and in such a way that lifts up Jesus’ call to give secretly so that our Father, who sees us in secret, will reward us in a way that no earthly praise can.
