Sorry it’s been so quiet here the last week or so. Our family is going through lots of changes in the next few months and life seemed to rev its engine this past week.
But, I have been reading some great things recently and thought I might find some space to share some of the gems I’ve enjoyed in the coming days.
I read Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret when I was in middle school and I can remember its impact on me still. But, I picked it up again last week and found so many of Taylor’s life lessons convicting and refreshing.
Here is one I’ve been chewing on over the last week of busy days:
‘Hudson Taylor was learning to think of God as THE ONE GREAT CIRCUMSTANCE of LIFE, and of all lesser, external circumstances as necessarily the
kindest,
wisest,
best,
because either ordered or permitted by Him.’
Somehow, in my ‘grown up world’ of home and babies and work and taxes, I’ve somehow lost this vision–that GOD is the GREAT CIRCUMSTANCE of my life. If asked, I’d certainly say so. But my thoughts and emotions throughout the day point to the unbelief in my heart.
How different my days would be if I trusted that
-each child’s laugh or smile
-each yummy bite
-each ray of sun
-each moment of learning and growth
is a grace from the GREAT CIRCUMSTANCE of LIFE?
And if that is true, then I must also believe that
-each child’s cry
-each spill or break
-each disappointment from friend or family
-each sorrowful parting
-each sickness
is also from the loving and faithful GREAT CIRCUMSTANCE
This must be the source of peace that passes understanding—to trust in ONE we cannot see or understand and to believe that whether tranquility or war surround us, all is well because of the ONE who is ordering all these things for GOOD.

Oh this is so true! That is the source of our encouragement and confidence: the absolute Sovereignty of God! Mix that together with the everlasting love He has for us, and surely peace must follow!
The Great Circumstance of Life…how articulately expanded! Hudson Taylor would be so pleased to read your post. Last night I struggled for words to depict “dwell” and “abide” in Psalm 91:1. Had I read your post first, I would have just linked to it. God bless you and little ones!
