How to Make a Moment Last Forever

in Everyday Lessons

As the days pass by and the months and the years, I’m struck with the desire to make time stand still.  Though I may long for sleep to come in the middle of a hard day, I’m slowly waking to the fact that days ticked off the calendar will soon add up to a lifetime come and gone.

And I can’t help but want some of the moments (perhaps just the better ones) to last forever.

Paul wrote about wanting his moments and efforts to last forever

But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.  1 Corinthians 3: 10b-15

I can’t stop the moments from passing, can’t hold the sun up a few hours longer, or keep my body from eventually marking time gone by. But, I can make a minute last longer than 60 seconds, make a day mark more than 24 hours.

Isn’t this what Christ did with his short 33 years?  He didn’t travel far or write a book, He didn’t attain success or even sustain a great following.  He just lived a holy life-humbly accepting His role in the Great Plan and glorifying God with every breath.  He built His minutes with the gold of love, the silver of peace and joy, and the precious stones of patience and gentleness and kindness and faithfulness and self control.

And today, in this second, when I fear that time is moving too quickly, I can choose Christ.  I can invite Him into this moment-Him with all His perfection.  I can ask as I look at the clock, for Him to live in me and live through me a fruitful second, a minute or hour that’s made of gold and silver and precious stones.

Time can feel like sand in the hour glass until I see that through Christ, these fleeting moments really can last forever.  When I choose to walk with the One who turned 33 years into ETERNITY, my short days can feel long and lasting. Lord, save me from building these days with hay and wood-let me redeem the time by looking away from the watch and watching You instead.

“Innocence like a bottle spun
sacred stones in careless hands
building up our cityscape
we write our names on a plot of land
where will we go, who will we be
and what, if anything, can we carry?

what can we carry, what will stay with us
what will shine like gold when the story’s told
some things will tarry, some will return to dust

there are things we can and things we cannot keep”

Song Artist Ali Rogers ‘The Things We Can and Cannot Keep’

Love how you described how Jesus used him time on this earth. “He just lived a holy life-humbly accepting his role in the Great Plan and glorifying God with every breath.”
May that be true of us as we follow him.

I’m here from Ann’s I know it’s Saturday – but I’m playing catch up – there were so many “Thank you” posts to read I didn’t even start reading the Wednesday linky until today.

Amen. No hay – no straw but what will last. I heart this, “When I choose to walk with the One who turned 33 years into ETERNITY, my short days can feel long and lasting.” So true – so true.

{smile}

Thank you for this today.

God Bless and keep you and all of yours
