The Way To Stand Firm in a Tsunami

in Everyday Lessons

In the wake of a devastating disaster like the recent Tsunami, some find comfort by believing that God had no control over such a storm.  Some prefer to believe that God’s hands were simply tied and for the moment, evil won over.  And I can understand the predicament….could a good God really let such a thing happen?  But why?  And how do you comfort those in the midst of their suffering and recovery–certainly not by telling them that all of this is part of God’s plan.

But, for me, this perspective is not helpful.  And I honestly can’t seem to find it in Scripture.

By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, the one who by his strength established the mountains, being girded with might; who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples, so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.’  Psalm 65:5-8

I don’t understand it all, of course, but I have to believe, even and especially in the wake of the Tsunami, that God is ALWAYS in control.  He was in control before the great quake…in His mercy keeping His waves from crashing onto every shore and enveloping His creation.  He was in control during the quake and the great wave-only letting the winds blow so hard and pushing the waves back with his strong hand.  And now, He is still in control–stilling the roaring of the seas and begging us all with all of His creation to be in awe at His signs.

I am, of course, not a victim of this storm.  But, this is my prayer and hope for all those who are suffering-that they will turn to the Lord who has suffered the greatest storm in history and risen in resurrection power.  Because of His crucifixion and defeat of death, each one of us, no matter what storm we may face, can look to Him and stand firm no matter how strong the winds may blow.
