I keep starting and starting over to memorize Scripture. I want the Word made flesh to put this flesh of mine to death and to make His word alive in me. These words from A Holy Experience last week urged me again to start again.
“What a heart knows by heart is what a heart really knows,” urges Dennis Lennon. And what the heart knows by heart is all that can calm the heart. Direct the heart. Strengthen the heart. What do our hearts really know? Will we who claim to be believers of the Word commit to shaping our lives with His Letters?”
I read and recommit and turn on music for the morning. We listen to Sons of Korah-a group that sings the psalms. Psalm 139 plays and everyone is dancing. We sing and spin and celebrate and the words find their way into my heart. And for me, this is the easiest way to memorize His Word…to hear it and sing it. I need to do the hard work of cards and reciting, too. But this is a start-and my heart needs to hear the music.
And if your heart needs a start too, perhaps a Sons of Korah song would set you on your way? You can buy Psalm 139 from their Rain album for just $.99 on iTunes. I’ll be singing right along with you, memorizing His Word and singing His praise at the same time.
Maybe Sons of Korah doesn’t sound like the music you love? Are there other artists that sing Scripture, word for word, in a way that inspires you? I’d love to hear.
