Why You Might Want to Sweat the Small Stuff

in Small Things

It really does seem like something I can just ignore.

Those quiet nudges that come throughout the day–

‘Go sit by her, talk to her, sure she’s not just like you, but she needs a friend.’

‘Stop what you’re doing, quit scurrying around the house worried that everything is in its place and just sit down with them.  Sit down with your children and look them in the eyes.  Listen to them, really listen.’

‘You should just skip that purchase for yourself.  Save the money and give it to someone else who needs it much more than you.’

‘You really should stop and write a ‘thank you‘ to her.’

‘Why don’t you turn this off, stop looking at this screen and go do something better?’

‘Sure, the newspaper only costs, $1, why don’t you give him more?’

‘All of this can wait.  Sit still for a while and pray first.’

Most days I excuse these as stream of consciousness, maybe my thoughts just wandering.  But could this be more, could these nudges (the ones that sound very much like the commands of Scripture) be whispers from that still, small voice? Could that small voice be giving direction from my Big God?

How would a day change if I listened…and obeyed?

‘Good and evil both increase at compound interest.  That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance.  The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of.‘  C. S. Lewis

But is this really cause to sweat? More work for me? It feels like it, but it shouldn’t. Christ poured all the sweat in Gethsemane and His was sufficient. He sweat blood over all this stuff-all of this small stuff. And He won for us a teacher, a Counselor-God Himself here with us!

So now, the work, the hard work, is finished. But the small work is ours, through grace, of course. So, Lord, more grace, grace for all this small stuff that could become something great.
