Because You Know You Can’t Do It All

Don’t miss the free printable link at the bottom of this post!

As the sun sets on Mother’s Day, I open my email to read the  greeting from the photo printing company I use.  ‘Happy Mother’s Day to the Woman Who Does it All.’  They clearly don’t know me very well.  Isn’t this the site that manages my photos, or my lack of photos?  The picture is clear from the schedule I keep and the few pictures that have made it on to their site that I’m not doing it all.

I’m not the stylist, coach, storyteller, comedian, healer, chauffeur.  Some days I’m doing well to just be the short order cook.

I kneel by the bed in the dark and make a list of the things I want to make certain and do as a mother, the things I want my kids to see and feel and know that I do.  I lay my head to rest and the challenges of the week ahead seem less daunting.

I can picture it-not picture perfect moments but all of us here, being perfected.  I can picture it-not me trying to do it all but letting God do all He wants.

Lord, I can’t do it all, but today, help me do this:
Know You
I may not know the name of that flower or the reason the tide comes in. I may not know the number of pi, but let me know you, Lord. And let my kids know that I do.

‘{You are} my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he.’  Isaiah 43:10

 Read Deep
The books are stacked high on the nightstand and the coffee table, the computer always seems to offer more words than I can read, but let me read your words first and always. Let the kids see me run to my well worn Bible and let them watch me work hard to understand these words that give life.
‘Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds…’  Deuteronomy 11:18

 Pray Long
I may run out of breath when we play chase, may not be able to outlast them in a tickle war, but let me never run out of time to pray, give me stamina to linger long in prayer.
‘Then Jesus told his disciples…that they should always pray and not give up.’ Luke 18:1

 Love Hard

Let me cuddle them close and hug them tight when they come close to angering me, upsetting my order or just plain being ugly.  Let me love when it’s hard and give of myself until they give in to You.

‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ John 15:13

 Give Glad

Let me be happy to empty my pockets, my closet and my savings.  Let me be glad to give up my space and my quiet and my time.

‘Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.’ 2 Corinthians 9:7

 Repent Soon

Let my lips know the shape of ‘I’m sorry.’  Help me say it often and always.  Let me always own my part of the sin.

“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…’  Isaiah 30:15

 Forgive Fast

Because she who has been forgiven much, loves much, let this sinful mama be full of loving forgiveness.  Help me throw off the grudges and wear down the chip on my shoulder.  Let me give grace.

‘Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.’  Colossians 3:13

 Speak Slow

Let me worry less about what I say and more about what I hear.  Open my ears and shut my mouth.  Let my children know me as a mama who hears them and who chooses her words carefully.

‘Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.’   James 1:19-20

 Thank Now

Let me be a mom who does thanksgiving.  In each moment, help me find a reason to say thanks.  Let the kids remember me as a mama who had no room to complain because her mouth was so full of thanks.

‘…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.’  1 Thessalonians 5:18

 Look Out
Let my kids catch me looking not at the mirror but across the street, across town, across the world. Give me eyes that look to the interests and needs of the world and help turn my children in that direction as well.
‘Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.’ Philippians 2:4

Lord, because I’m not a woman who can do it all, let all I do be done in and through YOU, the One who can.

60 Days of Prayer

Pray with us for the Egypt today.  A country that was full of Christians 1000 years ago is now more than 90 percent Muslim.  Let’s pray for revival and for strength for the Christians there now…that they would grow and flourish in the face of hardship and persecution.
