Scripture Says That?

in Personal Disciplines, Scripture Says That?

As I’ve made a new commitment to read through Scripture every morning this year, I’ve been surprised to find so many surprises.  After reading through the Bible a few times, I can start to think that the words are ‘old hat’ and I should read another book instead.  But, God has been faithful this last month to open my eyes to see things afresh. And I’m so thankful.

So, I’d like to start a new series here on Fridays that highlights a surprise I found in Scripture that week.  These will be short posts but will hopefully get us all excited to read God’s Word more often with more expectation.

Here’s the passage for this week.  It’s the first three verses of Psalm 46

‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  (Heard it before right?)

Therefore we will not fear, (here’s the kicker-)

Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling.’

Can you believe Scripture says that?  How many small things make me afraid, worried, or anxious?  And most of these are things that I feel some control over-caring for the little ones, finances, future decisions, family tensions, tough friendships—you name it.

And yet here, God tells us that it’s possible to not fear even if we see mountains moving into the ocean! Can you believe that Scripture says that?
