A Small Thing: Show Up

in Everyday Fruit,Hymns and Spiritual Songs,Small Things

Once I walked that aisle and my tummy swelled and days turned into laundry lists, I somehow threw in the dirty towel of doing much of anything besides surviving.  Every now and again, I would surface between a birth and a pregnancy and think I could take on the world again, only to eventually crumble under the weight of additional responsibilities and give up again.  The carrot of finally doing something  big has always dangled in front-teasing me that life might eventually feel significant.

These days, as my littlest is crawling and eating her own carrots, finally allowing me some sleep, I can easily spend my few quiet moments daydreaming of the possibilities-all that I’ll do with the 30 or 60 minutes of spare time I might snag that day.  And before long, I’ve made myself a new laundry list of big things that will never get done.

The list is long; I feel spent and haven’t even ascended the laundry pile.

Last December, I got to hear Jill Phillips in the ‘Behold the Lamb’ tour and she sang this song: ‘Show Up.‘  I’ve been singing it (to myself, of course) ever since.  She quotes Mother Theresa here-a quote that’s been a theme for me all year.

Instead of planning all the great I’ll do, perhaps I need to just show up and do one small thing in the love of Christ.

Show up and pray.

Show up and encourage.

Show up and read.

Show up and give.

Show up and smile.

Show up and touch.

Show up and see how Christ will show off.

Oh Lord, wherever I am today, let me be truly present, not somewhere in the future or somewhere on the internet or simply longing to be somebody else.  Let me show up and give your love in all the small things.  Let me let go of saving the world and watch you make a world of difference right here in my own.

Show Up

by Jill Phillips

There’re more people than your heart could ever hold,
More places than you could ever see,
The scrolling list of needs just grows and grows,
24 hours, 7 days a week.

‘Cause we think about so much
And do nothing at all
Afraid that what we have to give is so small.

You don’t have to save the world
All that hero talk is only superficial stuff
If you want to change the world,
All you got to do is show up, just show up.

So used to an immediate response
So used to given up when things don’t work
We know the long obedience is hard,
No shortcuts will make it easier.

‘Cause the journey is so long
But the difference is made
In a million small steps along the way.

You don’t have to save the world
All that hero talk is only superficial stuff
If you want to change the world,
All you got to do is show up, just show up.

No great things have I done, no great things have I done,
Only small things with great love.

And love has made a world of difference.

You don’t have to save the world.

Ouch! In a great way :) Thank you for this. I need greater perspective on this very thing as I lose sight of what’s in front of me. Steady and still is HARD. And thanks for helping me find a new album to refresh my days – do you know what a blessing the Seeds: Songs of Encouragement has been friend? Hope you are doing well!
