We all wake up wondering, ‘What will I get today?’
What can I eat, what can I buy, what is there to wear, anything fun to do?
We are all looking all over the place for joy.
But Christ asks it through David,
‘TODAY, who then will offer, willingly, consecrating himself to the Lord?’ 1 Chronicles 29:5b
The Hebrew explains that ‘consecrating himself’ is just a fancy English way of saying-
‘Who will give God an open hand?’
But what is there to give, Lord, when I feel so tired and spent and worn down? What do I have in my hands that could possibly make any difference? Sure there is all this, but how do I get any of this over there, where the need really is?
And so I walk around grasping, looking for joy in the cupboards and the closets and computer screen.
‘Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord.’ 1 Chronicles 29:9
I’m not sure where to start with giving, but I’ve got to start somewhere. This endless desire for getting is just killing me. I so desperately want to be glad but I forget that joy is often found at the bottom of the pocket that’s been emptied for others all day.
‘For all things come from you and of your own have we given you….O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.’ 1 Chronicles 29:15-16
Oh Lord, would you make us glad today? Turn our eyes from all we can get, to all that You’ve given. All this abundance comes from your hand and is all your own. It’s Yours. Do I know this? Think this? Live this? Let me hear you calling me today to give you my open hands and open my heart to receive the gladness that can only come from willingly giving back all that’s Yours in the first place.
‘And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great gladness.’ 1 Chronicles 29:22
