Scripture Says They Chose Barabbas?

in Scripture Says That?

I introduced a new series last week-hoping to help us realize how many surprises are in Scripture.  This week’s is based on Matthew 27.

“At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him…”Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered. “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.  But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”"

I read these words afresh recently.  I tried to think of a notorious prisoner’s deeds.  Theft, rape, assault, murder. And notorious…he was well known for his evil deeds.  The idea of criminals makes me fearful, angry, and insecure.  And yet, this true story reminds me that my nature is to not see Christ clearly-as One who heals all my diseases, comforts me like no other, and loves me without end.  This story reminds me that it is so easy to choose notorious sinners instead of my beautiful Savior.

Can you believe Scripture says that?
