Perhaps the story is so common that it’s lost its shock quality. ‘That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.’ Exodus 16
Scenario: The Israelites are wandering in the desert, trying to find their way to the Promised Land. They’ve got a lot of stuff that the Egyptians gave them as they fled, but they don’t have a thing to eat or drink. They’re in the DESERT.
Conflict: The people get all hot and bothered and complain to Moses that they’d rather be back in slavery. Moses asks God for help and God says He’ll provide some meat and some bread…EVERY DAY. Well, He’ll provide enough for every day, but double amounts on the sixth day so everybody can rest on the Sabbath.
Resolution: The people are hanging out in the middle of the desert and all of the sudden- a bunch of quail show up and offer themselves to the Israelites for dinner. The people go to bed full of meat. They wake up and see dew on the ground. It disappears and voila–there’s flakes on the ground-flakes of BREAD.
Okay-I’m sorry, but let’s think about how crazy this is. Let’s not even pretend that we’re camping in the desert. Let’s just imagine ourselves in our little homes-where we are now. You see a shadow at the door as you’re closing shop for the night, you open the door, and there’s a whole chicken sitting on your doorstep, ready for your consumption. You go outside in the morning to get the paper, and there’s a loaf of bread right outside your door. On Saturday, there’s two loaves of bread (an extra for Sunday). Now, imagine that there’s no grocery store anywhere within hundreds of miles of your home. Now, pretend you have no neighbors and you don’t know anyone that lives anywhere near your home. And the closest ‘neighbor’ you can think of hates you.
If Scripture really says that God, the God I trust in, provided food for His people in this way…what in the world am I so worried about?
Scripture really says that?

Yes, that* story! I still cannot quite get my head around it….what silly little people we are now, worrying about running out of bread and milk when it snows (or at the mere mention of the word snow!). Yes, lot’s of work to be done. The story is a great reminder, that yes, He will provide for our every need in His perfect timing.
Love it.
